Do you prep, or do you depend on the government?

So I decided this weeks blog was going to be about prepping. Not your typical bob, bol,or twenty five year shelf life food. Its spring time and with that comes severe weather. What do you do now during severe weather? Watch TV, listen to the radio or stand outside and watch while holding your cell phone? I actually do all of the above. However, I also am now a Skywarn Storm Spotter and a licensed ham radio operator. So here is is my suggestion...

Learn weather patterns without radar, tv or radio. Learn your clouds and what they are and what they mean. What do you do in a SHTF situation? No electric because of a storm or EMP. Skys darken, clouds roll in... What do you do? There is no sirens, news, cell phones. Nothing. Its all up to you! Know when to take shelter and what to do without relying on someone else. The National Weather Service offers a ton of information and online training. Here is a link to the training online that will give you a spotter certification through Skywarn. Skywarn Storm Spotter Certification by MetEd. You can also contact the American Red Cross or your local emergency management office. Please learn what to do and how to identify dangerous situations on your own.

Get a ham radio license. During the F5 tornado in Joplin Mo. this was one of the only forms of communication available. If possible, get a tube radio or put one in a Faraday cage. Watch this test video here Faraday Cage Test . You will need to store solar power with it. Protect these things because in a situation with no coms and no electric... the information you will get from a ham radio will be invaluable. And by the way, if the grid and the internet goes down, you can still send email, pics and video. That's right, all through ham radio. Research communications, practice, learn how to email and set up and use slow scan tv. Learn how to build antennas. You must remember with coms and solar comes trouble. Learn how to hide your antenna. Protect yourself and family at all costs.

Communications and weather go hand in hand. Research, learn and teach. You never know when you will need this information. But when you do, boy won't you be glad you have it? Find a local network of preppers, ham radio operators, weather and solar enthusiasts. Exchange information and training. However, be very careful. Do not ever disclose to much information. EVER!!! There is a limit.

OK, OK, OK... Lets talk about food. I suggest you store at least a years worth of food for your family. Buy heirloom seeds and learn to garden and grow your own food. I know a years worth of food is very expensive. However, It can be done. I buy whatever we will eat that is on clearance and store it. We have lots of meats stored. Tuna, chicken and roast beef, all for less than $1.00 per can. We store beans, rice, pasta and all kinds of other food we like. Always pay attention to expiration dates. Now I know this will not last you 25 years but you can rotate, use and replace all the time. If you want to store the Wise or Mountain House food, go right ahead but I still suggest grocery store items. Ease into the shock of no longer having the convenience of grocery stores. One thing on water... learn how to purify and store. Period.

Store things you use and need. There are things you can buy at the dollar store and stock up on for a dollar a piece. Shampoo, soap, medical items, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lighters, all kinds of stuff super cheap. It never hurts to have 15 or 20 bottles of Lysol stored for emergency cleaning and disinfecting after a disaster strikes. A package of combs and some brushes. Personal hygiene will be just as important as food and water. You won't be bathing everyday, but when you do, it would be nice to have soap and shampoo.

All of these items store very nicely in a tote and can be stored in a garage, closet,  crawl space or attic. Fill it up, tape the lid, set it on some pallets if in a crawl space, basement or attic. They will last for years and years if stored properly.
